Closed-loop control of extracorporeal oxygen and carbon dioxide gas transfer

Additional extracorporeal gas transfer facilitates ultra-protective mechanical ventilation during treatment of severe lung disease. The proposed automation contributes to both patient safety and therapeutic success. A decentralized control system set the oxygen and carbon dioxide gas transfer rates. The controlled variables are estimated using standard measurement devices without direct blood contact. To reduce patient stress, an outer-loop integral controller adjusts the extracorporeal blood flow. The control system was first evaluated in silico and then in vivo using an animal model. Finally, the method is shown to be feasible and its response time is sufficient to meet patients' clinical needs.

Florence Duomo project (1420–1436): Learning best project management practice from history

This paper narrates the project management of the construction of the Florence Duomo by Filippo Brunelleschi in the fifteenth century. This was the most significant dome project in Europe in 1300 years, and possibly the most significant, innovative and complex project of the Renaissance era (Colombo and Lanzavecchia, 1997). It still stands as the largest brick dome ever built. In order to achieve what seemed technically impossible at the time, Brunelleschi researched and adapted the construction and project management of the Pantheon in Rome in the second century. The paper allows us in turn to learn both product and process innovation from this case study, both of which are essential to contemporary project management practice. The case is valuable in understanding key drivers of project management success, and illustrates the substantial potential for learning, and therefore knowledge transfer, from previous historical projects and experiences.

Are Trademark Counts a Valid Indicator of Innovation? Results of an In-Depth Study of New Benelux Trademarks Filed by SMEs

This paper extends the emerging literature on the value of trademarks for innovation studies and policy-making with the first empirical study at the trademark level. It gives a view on how companies use trademarks and interpret trademark activities. A sample of 660 new Benelux trademarks registered by small- and medium-sized enterprises reveals that 60 per cent of recently registered Benelux trademarks refer to innovation activity, predominantly to product or service innovation. The reference to innovation co-varies with various applicant and trademark characteristics unknown from previous studies. Finally, the sample reveals that most of the trademarks used to signal innovative offers are filed close to its market introduction without combining them with other intellectual property rights. This holds especially for trademarks related to service innovation.     

Guar gum: A novel binder for ceramic extrusion

Ceramic honeycomb extrusion is a technique capable of attaining high strength, porous ceramics. However, challenges prevent the realisation of its potential. These include the design of an intricate honeycomb die and the formulation of an extrudable paste. The present study addresses the latter by using guar gum (GG) as a binder. GG was rationally selected because hydrogels thereof exhibit strong shear-thinning and high stiffness properties, which are required for extrusion. Rheological analyses demonstrated ceramic pastes with similar qualities were achieved, with hydroxyapatite (HA) used as the model ceramic. The shear stiffness modulus of HA pastes was determined as 8.4 MPa with a yield stress of 1.1 kPa. Moreover, this was achieved with GG as the sole additive, which further facilitates the overall fabrication process. The binder extraction notably occurred at relatively low temperatures when other high molecular weight polymers demand temperatures above 1000 °C; therefore the latter precludes the use of ceramics with low sintering onset. The process culminated in a porous HA scaffold with similar porosity to that of a commercial HA graft, but with higher compressive strength. Lastly, the study notes that the biological and water-soluble properties of GG can broaden its application into other ceramic fabrication processes.
